“The Grain Issue”
“A quiet revolution is taking place in the old domain of agriculture, milling, and baking. Farmers, millers, and bakers are coming together to breathe new life into heritage grain varieties, resurrect ancient stone milling techniques, and craft artisanal bread that honors both tradition and a refreshing taste of the land.” Edible Blue Ridge is a well-known magazine that focuses on the regional food scene in Southwest and Central Virginia. This magazine is published quarterly and provides its readers with captivating photos, delicious recipes, and insightful stories about the amazing folks in the region. HERD Ventures was brought on as a collaborator for 2023 fall edition.
Telling The Story
Daniel James, the creative director of Herd Ventures, produced and followed the three part story for “The Grain Issue” of Edible Blue Ridge magazine. He visited and interviewed each individual farmer, baker, and miller to gather their viewpoints on the grain revolution happening in Virginia. By creating reels for social media, writing and partnering with a food writer in print, and showcasing interviews on the web, this story was able to reach a wider audience. Through the captured footage, HERD Ventures showcased various processes that lead to providing the community with healthful and nutritious grain varieties and how many talented artisans in the region transform these ingredients into consumable works of art.
